Norton Commander (abbreviated NC or Norton) is a text-based file manager that is a system shell for the MS-DOS operating system; later it was also available for systems from the Microsoft Windows family. As a program for managing the structure of files and directories, it has become the prototype for a whole group of traditional file managers. It was written by John Socha and approved by Peter Norton Computing (acquired in 1990 by Symantec Corporation), hence its name.

The concept of the program is based on the DOS command scheme:

the command source directory file destination directory file
and, consequently, the idea of dividing the program window into two panels representing lists of files in both the source and target directories - this model has become so ingrained that it has not been canceled by using a completely different method of folder and file management used in Windows Explorer, which, rather, is one of the Windows Administration Console than the file Manager. All CNC commands are issued using the function keys from F1 to F10, and later versions also use mouse and drag methods.

A simple text file editor is built into this manager, which provides convenient viewing. It could also be used to run other programs, then most of the Norton Commander code was removed from RAM, freeing up space for the child process (the program being run); there was only a small resident loader responsible for reloading the main program code after exiting the child process.

In a short time, Norton Commander became one of the most popular programs in its class and a role model for competitors - its Polish clone was Foltyn Commander, but a much more widely used clone was the Ukrainian Volkov Commander. Norton Commander is also modeled after Linux Midnight Commander and is designed for Windows Total Commander (formerly Windows Commander), very similar to the original and works in Windows - FAR Manager command line mode (Russian authorship) and CNW Commander for Novell NetWare.

Norton Commander itself developed further, and along with the development of Windows family systems, not only its version 5.51 for DOS was released, but also version 2.01 for Windows, fully utilizing the capabilities of Microsoft systems. The program supports long file names and allows, among other things, previewing the contents of files in the most popular formats (including Microsoft Office programs) and archiving documents in ZIP format.

Since 1990, after the acquisition of Peter Norton Computing, the program was developed by Symantec Corporation until 1999, when further development of the program ceased.
